Should SMBs Join TikTok?

TikTok ranked as the number one app in 2022. Is it time to create an account?

You may think TikTok is just a social media app for teenage girls to show off their dance moves, but you may be mistaken. In fact, Talkwalker and HubSpot joined forces to talk about social media trends in 2022 and ranked TikTok as the number one app, saying “TikTok will take over social media, leaving other platforms to adapt.”

It’s All About the Algorithm

TikTok shows users content by using a highly personalized algorithm based on what videos users watch, how long they stay on them, and what content they scroll past in order to customize a “For You Page” that show users what they want to see when they want to see it.

How Your Business Benefits

Businesses can take advantage of this algorithm for “free targeting.” When you create original content for TikTok, the algorithm will automatically show it to audiences who are most likely to engage with it. This eliminates the need to pay to boost your posts.

Influencers

If you’re having trouble gaining traction, the easiest way to break into the algorithm is by leveraging influencers. For example, if you are a pet food company, reaching out to a dog account with millions of followers is a great way to get your product out there.

Great for the Little Guys

TikTok ads work well for small to medium businesses (SMBs) because they allow marketers to meet users where they already are. There are no disruptive pop-up ads or video ads that you can't skip on TikTok. Instead, ads are seamlessly woven into users’ For You Page in a way that barely feels like an ad. This way, a brand’s message gets delivered without interrupting the users’ overall experience. SMBs can choose to blend in by following trends or stand out from the crowd to capture attention and gain followers.

How Other Companies Do It

The more difficult method of standing out requires a keen marketing strategy to build up your own brand's following. Companies like Duolingo, whose product wasn’t widely used by younger audiences, have mastered TikTok. They used humor and followed trends in order to make their Duo mascot a Generation Z online icon.

In Summary

As Presh Marketing’s resident Gen Zer, I encourage you to give TikTok a chance. The world is changing and its time to modernize your company and realize that the younger generations are not so young anymore. In order to keep your businesses marketing mix relevant you need to meet them where they are. And they are on TikTok.
